11:00 am
most of the snow fell to the south of d.c., closing several schools. while many kids are home playing in the snow, for crews, it's all business. treating the roads. news 4 is live at the dome. hey, tony. >> reporter: these guys here at the salt dome in woodbridge have been going since 7:00 p.m. last night. you can see, there's a back
11:01 am
loader loading up some salt. they actually brought in more salt knowing they're a little low here. but, guys, they've been salting the interstate. this morning, we spent some time on prince william parkway. conditions pretty troublesome early in the morning, but as the day went on, it wasn't that bad. but listen, we tked to some kids this morning because prince william county schools were closed and they were making the best of the cold weather and the snow. >> kids are so lucky, man. snow day, get to kick back, chill, relax, and i've still got to go to work. >> reporter: as keith cunningham leaves his neighborhood, he takes a parting jealous shot at the kids outside in the snow. schools are closed today. so the bus sits, the campus empty, the bells silent. but down the street, it's time for a snowball fight. >> i came out to walk my dog and i have been throwing snowballs at my mama.
11:02 am
>> reporter: a day off from school means a nice walk around the block with mom and the pup which isn't a bad deal for mom either. >> not too much of an inconvenience? >> no. especially being a teacher. it's a good day for me too. >> reporter: the commute in northern virginia early this morning was a little troublesome. but by 6:00 a.m., many of the main roads had been salted and plowed like here on prince william parkway. one couple decided to make the most of it a little after 4:00 a.m. >> snowman, snowwomen, snow wife, snow people, snowball fights. >> we're just enjoying it. that's all. >> reporter: the side roads still remain a travel issue. it won't be until this afternoon that vdot makes a significant impact clearing them. one driver told us he hadn't seen any plows around his neighborhood. >> it's really bad because it's slippery. you can't drive more than 10 or 15 miles per hour. that's a problem right now there's no trucks, nothing right now. no salt truck. i didn't see any trucks. >> reporter: i just talked to
11:03 am
one of the supervisors here at the vdot lot and he says they still have a lot of work to do even though they only do the interstates here. he's talked to some of the other stations and they're trying to make their way to the neighborhoods. if you're still at home trying to get out and shovel your car off and get out of your neighborhood, standby, they're on the way. but other than that, i've got to tell you, we came down 95 this morning. it was a little slow getting down here, but we checked on it a couple of minutes ago. it's moving fairly well. conditions are good. back to you. >> thanks, tony. and northern virginia wasn't alone in this morning's white awakening. getting to work was a job of its own in parts of maryland this morning. folks who got their first real taste of winter. >> reporter: well, it wasn't a ton of snow, just about an inch, maybe two inches in some areas. but it was the timing of it that was bad, falling through the night and into the early morning. it made for a difficult rush hour. as the world slept, a blanket of snow formed on area roads.
11:04 am
in the early going, things were rather treacherous, especially in areas to the south. >> i came out ofolden beach in southern maryland, the roads are vital. it's rough out there. >> reporter: spots continued to plague throughout the rush hour. but as road crews plowed and spread salt, there was improvement on major roads. >> it's not too bad. i think i did good waiting a little while to travel out. >> major roads are fine. i think the back roads, i think they probably could've done a little better this time. >> reporter: and those neighborhood streets were quite slippery. many school systems like charles county decided they were too slippery for buses and canceled classes for the day. and so porter traded in his backpack for a snow shovel. >> i knew my grandma was going to tell me to start shoveling. i was like -- i was like, okay. and i just went to go do it so i
11:05 am
can, you know, go back in the house, play some video games. >> reporter: it is still very cold out. so, unfortunately, there's the potential for refreeze. and there's also talk of more snow on friday. in waldorf, megan mcgrath, news 4. >> well, as you can see, the snow has stopped around here and the sun is shining. can we expect some melting today? let's ask tom kierein. >> not much, temperatures will stay below freezing. good morning, that snow transformed the landscape. now, it's finally looking and feeling like winter. here's the radar history over the last 18 hours that system did come in and it moved in quickly from the north and west. and it swept across virginia, west virginia, the district, and maryland. the heaviest snows, those stripes of bright white there in southern maryland, that's where they got the heaviest snowfall. there was a band there in extreme southern maryland, parts of st. marys county and southern charles county got up to four inches. few spots around far southern
11:06 am
st. marys county got over 5 inches of snow. and yenly, thoug lgenerally aro metro area, about a dusting toen a inch. around 20 degrees in prince georges county. montgomery county near 20, now climbing into the low 20s in arlington and fairfax counties. reagan international is at 24 degrees. not much more of a warm-up, a lot of the sun's energy is going to trying to melt a little bit of that snow. we could get some more tomorrow. i think there's a likelihood of that. we'll talk about that, how much, and a look at the weekend too and into next week in just a few minutes, barbara. >> thank you, tom. let's check the midday traffic. danella, how are we looking? >> still seeing problems on the road, keith. we're going to start southbound lanes at riverdale road. they are all blocked at this time because of a water main break. northbound, you're going to have just the right lane getting you by at riverdale road, really south of east/west highway in that area. please avoid the area while crews are working.
11:07 am
let's head over to alexandria, virginia, just past slaters lane. you're going to see only the left lane getting you by the accident there. i can tell you it involves a crash, poles, wires are down and you may see dark traffic lights in that area. >> all right. right now, john kerry is on capitol hill for his confirmation hearing to replace hillary clinton as secretary of state. he's answering questions from the senate foreign relations committee. by the way, he's the chairman of that committee. news 4 joins us now with more. melissa, what kinds of questions could he be facing? >> well, he's been on the committee for 28 years, led it for the past four, as expected, keith, the questions thus far have been fairly friendly. now, the hearing started just about an hour ago, this is a live look right now. it's the first of three for obama's national security nominees and the least controversial. later, lawmakers plan to ask kerry about the civil war in syria, his stance on foreign aid and the keystone xl pipeline.
11:08 am
he's expected to win by partisan support for his colleagues. >> i'm already excited by the many ways we can work together in which we must work together. in order to advance america's security interest in a complicated and ever more dangerous world. >> 2008, you might remember obama chose hillary clinton over kerry for this very post. former republican senator chuck hagel will face tough questions at his confirmation hearing next thursday, and john brennan, the president's choice for cia director will be quizzed at his hearing next month. keith? >> thanks, melissa. and we're waiting to hear from defense secretary leon panetta. we expect him to announce about an hour from now that the pentagon is lifting its ban on women in combat. the policy change will overturn a 1994 rule that banned women from being part of combat units. it'll open more than 200,000 positions to women. despite the combat ban, women in the military have still given
11:09 am
their lives for this country. more than 150 women have been killed in iraq and afghanistan. and gay rights activists are making a new appeal to the white house. they want president obama to ban federal contractors from discriminating against gay employees. current federal law bans discrimination based on sex, race, and national origin, but didn't mention sexual orientation. d.c.'s police chief is challenging the findings of a new report released just a few minutes ago that the d.c. police mishandled hundreds of rape cases. chief kathy lanier says the information in the report by human rights watch was gathered using flawed methods. but news 4 spoke with one victim who tells us she was mistreated by police and her case mishandled after she says she was sexually assaulted. >> the detective right in front of me told the nurse that i didn't need the exam done. and the nurse to her credit said
11:10 am
that was her job to determine and that i would need to talk with her and i did. the experience of being raped was absolutely humiliating, but it wasn't until i talked to police that i felt shamed. >> my fear is that this report because it is based largely on older data, instance involving one or two detectives who are no longer in the unit, it's painting a picture that that's the current state of affairs here and it's not. >> the report says in the past three years the d.c. police have failed to document more than 170 assault cases and failed to investigate 35 other cases. our time, 11:10, and coming up, it's not the event he hoped to attend this week. what brings mitt romney to washington? plus, new gun control efforts. the

play for you. and we have a feeling looking like winter finally. look at this from maryland where they got about 4 inches of snow. this picture sent in to weather@nbcwashington.com. look at this dupont circle neighborhood in washington. it was transformed into a magical winter wonderland sent in by isabella lara. and this one from leonardtown, maryland, four inches of snow there too in southern maryland. here's another photo sent in by ambrose, one of our co-workers at nbc 4. the neighborhood there is in arlington, virginia, where there was about 1/2 inch of snow. right now, beautiful blue sky over the potomac and 24 at reagan international, and northerly wind up to about 20 miles an hour. and when that windchill is down just near ten degrees, temperatures much of the region low to mid-20s. northern virginia, much of maryland. and it's going to the not warm up much more. that sun's energy is not heating the ground. it's going to evaporate some of that snow. right now, the windchill just in

the low teens, much of the region with the wind only around 10 to 15 miles an hour. well, that snow came quickly, beginning late last night, the heaviest snows fell between about midnight and 3:00 a.m. in southern maryland and that's where they got those totals there in st. marys county, some locations over four inches, some places in far southern maryland at 5 1/2 inches. this band in the dark blue generally anywhere from 4 inches plus in southern maryland to about an inch or two around the blue ridge. generally about 1/2 inch or so around the metro area. as we go forward into friday, that's when we'll have increasing clouds, this is friday at 3:00 in the afternoon. all these areas in lavender zone of potential more accumulating snow. disease lo does look like around 3:00 p.m. 6:00 or 7:00, accumulating snow by then. 9:00 it'll again to move off to the east and quickly exit and be gone. it's not going to last very long, but we could get one to

three inches of that snow tomorrow afternoon into tomorrow evening. for this afternoon, partly cloudy, cold and breezy, temperatures only in the upper 20s. and we'll have a northwesterly wind around 10 to 25 miles an hour. so those windchills will be down in the teens much of the day. and then, tomorrow, thickening clouds, teens in the morning, afternoon highs into the upper 20s. and that accumulating snow. again, i think about one to three inches, much of the region, kind of widespread like the one last night. that'll begin late friday afternoon, ending before midnight friday night. sun back saturday and sunday, but cold, teens in the morning, afternoon highs only around 30 or so saturday, maybe mid-30s sunday. then warming up maybe near 40 on monday and tuesday into the 40s. and next time we might get precipitation after friday maybe in the form of rain on wednesday is the way it looks right now. and you can get also a wonderful slide show of all the latest snow pics, those will be on nbcwashington.com. and you can check that out right now. and check out all the latest pictures too on twitter and

11:38 am
several 911 calls, some from within the house, some from neighbors who saw smoke pouring out the windows of this home. when firefighters arrived here on the scene, they found heavy sno smoke coming from this house. that's when they discovered two people that were inside the home. one man was taken out of the house by rescue crews. they were working on him on the scene here, performing it appeared cpr, we are told he is in critical condition. there is a second injury, as well, a woman, we're not sure, though, about the severity of her injuries. again, all this very new happening within the hour here on everest drive. so in terms of what caused this blaze, all of that still early, still under investigation. but a neighbor that i spoke to said that she saw a lot of smoke. she didn't see fire, necessarily, in the beginning. just a lot of heavy smoke, just pouring out the windows. that's when she knocked on the door. that's when she called 911. she said she didn't begin to see flames coming through the roof
11:39 am
until just a little bit after -- after that. it was -- she describes it more of a smoke situation in the beginning of this fire. so rescue crews still here on the scene trying to figure out exactly what happened. again, we have two injuries, one is very serious. there's also the second injury, but we don't have much detail with regard to that one. reporting live in temple hill, news 4, back to you. >> a great job by that neighbor. dramatic pictures from temple hills. danella, what's the latest? >> well, right now, i have an update on the water main break at kenilworth avenue just south of east west highway. your left lane is blocked but in both directions, north and southbound. that's a lot better than it was earlier. let's head over to i-270 at father hurley boulevard. no accidents and very light volume and the roads look a lot clearer than they did this morning. so if you have to make this commute, it's a good one.

"washington post" reporter who you may remember is one of our former business reporters, she sat next to me for quite a long time. she's got a new book out called "cheat the clock." and i was so surprised when i heard this was the kind of book you wrote because i think of you as being a business reporter. >> well, this is sort of just a whole new thing i fell into for both personal reasons and just sort of a natural professional interest. and it's very, very exciting. >> well, "cheat the clock," it's called, tell us what made you decide to write this book. >> i started from a personal perspective, because i'm married to someone who looks much, much younger than his age.
11:41 am
and i started asking questions of some of the top aging experts in the country. that's me and jim. >> i happen to know he's 17 years older than you. >> he is. so if you saw that picture, he is actually 64. and -- >> on that picture? >> on that picture. 64. >> i'm going to take another look at that picture. >> he looks pretty good for his age, something that a lot of people asked about. so i decided to take the next step as a reporter to say, to ask various aging experts, how can this be? is it genetics or is it what he does? and to my great surprise, every one of them came back and said it's what he does. >> you've got to share. >> of course. that's the next step. here's the issue. the issue is that scientists, aging scientists have really discovered a tremendous amount about how aging works and what's happening inside ourselves. and what i found in doing this research is the things they found that affect those processes in the cells are very simple things, actually. things you can do on a daily basis that anybody can do. and these were the things that jim does.
11:42 am
